Lorenc+Yoo created new wayfinding signage this original John Portman atrium space. The team developed a comprehensive wayfinding strategy to address confusing circulation through the two towers. Additionally, they simplified ballroom naming and numbering to improve visitors’ ease of use. The final result is new floor- and wall-mounted directories, overhead directionals, tower identity signs, and plaques. All the signs use aluminum painted to match the wall surfaces and/or stainless steel.

Lorenc+Yoo designed a signage program for the children’s hospital that used a seaside vernacular to create a playful environment for the hospital’s guests. Children could insert their own drawings into their room signs, while others contained interactive puzzles.

Location: Grand Forks, ND

Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, South Dakota retained Lorenc+Yoo Design to develop an Environmental Graphic Branding system for both its main campus and satellite facilities. LYD developed a system of major identification elements, directional signs, building-applied signs, and regulatory signs to unite the diverse architecture of the various branches in the region, giving it a singular identity. LYD took a planar approach to the system, intersecting different elements to create a textured design.

Client: Florida Hospital Health Village
Location: Orlando, FL

Lorenc+Yoo Design developed a comprehensive district-wide Environmental Graphic Design system with Davis & Associates, including logo design for Florida Hospital Health Village. The district combines health care, retail, and residential uses in a single campus, so its signage needed to be clear and easily understandable. Working within the hospital’s existing design guidelines, Lorenc+Yoo’s signage landmarks convey the high quality of the healthcare provided at Florida Hospital. The signature entryway sign rests on a white L-shaped base with a crown-cut top, which draws the eye to the directional signals. A blue tablet guides patients to the hospital’s most visited locations, including the Cancer Institute, the main plaza and, most vitally, the emergency room.

Client: North Carolina State University
Location: Raleigh, NC

Lorenc+Yoo Design faced a unique challenge with the design of the wayfinding system for North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. Not only was the charge to design the main gateways to the campus and define the graphics standards, but also to create a system of hundreds of individual signs that could be assembled, changed, and disassembled easily. The result is a design that is attractive, visually consistent, and easy to maintain. It uses brick, anodized aluminum, and white panels along with the school’s trademark red color to compliment the buildings on campus and provide clear guidance to all audiences.

Client: Pope John Paul II Cultural Center
Location: Washington, DC

Lorenc+Yoo Design designed the integrated signage system for the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center at Catholic University Campus in Washington, D.C. The goal was to create a cultural landmark, speaking to the legacy of this Polish pope. With a team that included Leo A Daly Architects, LYD integrated signage into the landscape and the building’s highly articulated architecture, creating a modern yet approachable look. The signage system comprises a variety of materials–from glass to metal to stone–and gives contemporary forms a very personal touch.

Lorenc+Yoo Design was asked to remake Atlanta’s premier cultural institution into a more inviting space. Working with a trimmed-down budget of $16 million, the designers collaborated on a plan that transformed the once mausoleum-like marble box into a place of light, free-flowing space, and entertaining activity.

Designers had to create exterior marquis signage that served two critical functions: to inform the public of ongoing events at each of the center’s four institutions and to signal the architectural intent of breaking the box. Renovation construction added new light and openness to the building, and this distinctive marquis needed to reflect clarity in graphic communication for the arts center.

The building’s original interior graphics had been a confusing jumble of competing messages. Each institution designed, sized, and placed signage as desired. Corporate sponsors hung their own banner panes, with no regard to style, size, or color palette. Donors were recognized on flimsy silk-screened plastic sheets that changed yearly. The resulting scene was cluttered and, even worse, unsophisticated.

The designers worked closely with the architects and the institutions to define identities for the member institutions. The program established a format for signage that related to the architecture of the building and tied the signage to the structure in an attractive merge of form and color.

Lorenc+Yoo Design created an environmental graphics program for the Memphis Library to increase the visual energy of this prominent public space. Looney Ricks Kiss Architects designed the building as a steadfast modern statement, so LYD was asked to design an energetic signage system reminiscent of retail malls and other popular spaces. LYD designed the library’s exterior signage to speak to the silver palette of the building, energizing it with bold typography and bright reds and yellows. The main post contains a custom lighting feature comprised of two open books, one identifying the library, and the other as an accent piece. The interior signage also speaks to the exterior vernacular, with a punchy red gloss finish.
