Birmingham, Alabama sought to enhance the vista along the drive that leads into the airport by masking the sight of the airport’s rental car lots’ chain link fence. Lorenc+Yoo Design pushed the lots 50 feet back and installed an eight foot-tall berm. The team designed simple landscaping that juxtaposes a series of 11 white gliders, inspired by the appearance of paper airplanes and arranged to mimic the stages of a plane taking off. The gliders stand in sequence in evolving stages of flight.

Entitled “Rising Hand,” Lorenc+Yoo’s polished aluminum sculpture for Samsung rises 50 feet (15 meters) in the air and features a hand holding a Samsung mobile phone displaying videos, messages and other information on its LED screen. The sculpture’s powerful upward thrust is futuristic and dynamic, symbolizing the limitless possibilities in the future of communication.

The dramatic spire-form directory sculpture in the lobby of 3003 Perimeter Summit represents a labor of love by both Lorenc+Yoo Design and its client. 297 plates of 3/4″ thick glass, varied in size, large to small, thirty-six inches in diameter at the base are stacked to form a twenty-two foot tall spire/cone. Each glass plate has a hand chipped and polished edge which captures and reflects light to create a visually dramatic effect. A central hollow core, seven inches in diameter, allows supply of fiber-optic cable for a continuous light source top to bottom. The base and tip of the unit are stainless steel.
